CND’s expert team of 21 nail stylists from around the globe collaborated with 90 top designers in New York, London and Paris to accessorize each fashion collection and set the nail trends for upcoming fall and winter months. Drawing upon years of experience in the fashion and beauty industries, CND leaders Roxanne Valinoti, Angi Wingle, Amanda Fontanarrosa, Cheri Pollard, and Kristina Baune determined the perfect look for each show.
This fall/winter season, the overarching nail trends are:
• Urban chic nails in variations of charcoal and dove gray
• Deep reds and blackened-jewel tones in emerald, sapphire and amethyst
• Beige-y nudes to elongate fingers and complement matte understated lips
Tough Chic
Gray and futuristic shades on nails with dramatized eye makeup depicted the popular theme of a fiercely independent and altogether artful woman. Hyde In The Dark, a metallic charcoal was a runway favorite, appearing at Louis Vuitton, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Lyn Devon. Costello Tagliapietra’s 40s Film Noir inspiration translated into a dove gray crème on nails to echo the heavy shadows and draped silk. For Catherine Malandrino, Cherie Pollard created a taupe silver shade by blending G’Listen, an iridescent terra cotta, with a velvety dove gray to match the collection’s color palette. And at Development, silver-dusted black nails complemented smudged black eyes and exaggerated designs.
Scarlet Fever
Nails in brazen, autumn shades of red lit up the runways at Gilles Deacon, Badgley Mischka, and Ruffian. House of Rebels, a deep red crème, seen at Katy Rodriguez completed the structural and crimson-accented collection while Fedora, a slick auburn nail color, meshed well with the heavily-lined eyes seen on the runways of Chris Han, Luca Luca and Jenni Kayne. Baroque, an opulent claret, supplemented the luxurious fabrics and regal accouterments at Carolina Herrera and Bill Blass.
Costume Jewels
Jewel-toned nails accessorized many collections, suggesting bold femininity. NFS, a moody deep teal, complemented the heavy eye shadow in peacock blues and greens at Monique Lhuillier. Nail Noir, a deep raisin crème, was a runway regular this season, gracing the fingers and toes of models at Milly, Naeem Khan, and Willow. Twinkle’s modernized “Victor Victoria” theme borrowed the best of menswear and transformed it into feminine looks. The confident, sporty styling extended to lavender colored nails. Rock Royalty, a dark plum crème, harmonized with the intermittent aubergine hues seen at Tony Cohen. For Charlotte Ronson’s revival of 90s’ grunge and cute baby wear, Angi Wingle designed tart blueberry-colored fingernails to rival the over-pronounced patent accessories and patterned fabrics.
Custom Primed
The CND team applied its expertise to some shows that called for commissioned colors and ornate designs to personify the designer’s vision. At Karen Walker, models alternated between a custom blended midnight blue and the soft magnolia-cream of French Pink to accent the Edwardian-youth and Victorian-frill inspired collection. For the Baby Phat show, Kristina Baune designed loud, almond-shaped nails in Voodoo black adorned with black Swarovski crystals to accessorize the flapper-inspired frocks and barely-there burlesque styles. At Jasmine de Milo, almond-shaped nails were painted an antique sheer gold and given black tips for a decorative 20s feel. Crescent moons in popping Plexi Pink illuminated the custom cherry-colored painted toes of some models at the 3.1 Phillip Lim show. To complement Ruffian’s good schoolgirl meets bad-boy thematic, Roxanne Valinoti designed chipped toes in chrome-dusted black and paired them with fingernails in rich Chianti-colored Enamel On Canvas. At Jayson Brunsdon, short nails were painted Retro White and adorned with solitary black hearts in Voodoo to complete the playful feminine silhouettes.
Satin Sheers
Serenity, a gossamer beige, ruled the runways appearing at 14 shows including Abaete, BCBG, Elie Saab, Douglas Hannant, Giambattista Valli, J. Mendel, Nina Ricci, Reyes, TIBI and Yigal Azrouel. Tory Burch and Miss Sixty each channeled haute 60s hippie and rock and roll into contemporary lady-like designs that were perfectly expressed with Negligee, an opalescent pink, and Nail Gloss, a warm translucent pink, respectively. Nail Gloss also appeared on the London runways of Jaeger London and Jasper Conran. At the Reem Acra show, classically tailored silks, taffetas and tulles were romanced with pearl fingertips in Moonlight & Roses. Mystere, a powder sheer, left all the mystery to Peter Som’s dark and eccentric designs.
Nail in the Buff
Popular among makeup artists was the clean face with understated lips and a dark, embellished eye. CND balanced the look with high gloss, nude nails using SolarOil and topcoat, AirDry – a patent leather clear. This minimalist technique appeared on the runways of DKNY, Donna Karan, Herve Leger, Jonathan Saunders, Proenza Schouler, Thakoon and Max Azria.
CND’s key nail stylists are available for interviews and photo shoots.
